Apple Pear Pie Sweetened With Dates
As the season changes, the air becomes crisp and we get nostalgic with that Fall feeling (Just for a few days last week...Los Angeles didn't get the memo...we're back at the beach with 103 degree weather) But soon we too will catch up and it will truly be Fall and time for apple picking, pumpkins, cider and of course apple pie! I made this apple pie for a gathering we had with friends this past weekend and I decided to try adding pears to it because after all, pears do not get nearly as much love as they should this time of year. They are constantly overshadowed by apples so in an effort to make up for that I added them to my pie! I also decided to sweeten it with dates instead of sugar because dates are such a great sweetener and are packed with flavor and nutrients. Dates also do not get enough attention by the way.

2 Starkrimson Pears
2 Granny Smith Apples
2 Jonagold Apples
12 Medjool Dates Roughly Chopped
6 TBS + 1/4 cup Water
2 TBS All Purpose Flour
1 TSP Cinnamon
1 TSP Pure Vanilla Extract
3 Pinches Nutmeg
Juice from 1 Lemon (about 1/4 cup)
2 Store bought pie crusts (I bought them from the health food store because they have minimal ingredients)
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Remove packaging from pie crusts and let them begin to defrost at room temperature. Peel and core apples. Thinly slice. Core pears, no need to remove the skin. Remove the core from the pears and thinly slice. Add the apples to a medium size sauce pan and set the pears aside. Next you will make your date sugar for your sweetener. Roughly chop your dates and place them in the food processor, blender, or bullet..whatever you have on hand. Add the 6 TBS of water and puree. Remove from the motor and whip with a fork to loosen up any pieces that were missed. Then add the date sugar into the pot with the apples and stir until the apples are coated. Then add the lemon juice and stir. Add the cinnamon, vanilla, and nutmeg and mix until combined. Next, you will make your thickener of flour and water. In a separate small bowl mix 1/4 cup water with the flour until smooth then add this to your apples. Stir until combined and cook on medium heat for about 7 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and fold in pears until combined.
Pour mixture into pie crust. Make the lattice crust for the top, use the second pie crust. Use a knife to cut long 1 inch wide strips for the top. Lay the strips across the top of the pie horizontally about an inch apart then layer more strips on top vertically across the pie. Press the edges to seal. Bake the pie on a cookie sheet for 45 minutes. Remove from oven and let cool. Enjoy!
